Wilde!

March 9th, 2010

I am reading The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde at the moment. I am still in the first chapters but I came across this quote in the first few pages:

To me, Beauty is the wonder of wonders. It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances. The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible…

The way I see it, it goes very much in the opposite direction of St Exupery’s quote in Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince):

On ne voit bien qu’avec le coeur. L’essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.

(One only sees truly with the heart. The essential things are invisible to the eyes.)

There is much to discuss about, but it’s past noon and I still have lots to do because I woke up late so I’ll let you do the thinking and pick out of the two. Personally, I liked St Exupery’s one first because I read Le Petit Prince a long time ago and it seems so much less selfish but Oscar Wilde is quite right, judging by the appearance is quite inevitable. The invisible things only come second most of the time… ah well. xo

Art!

March 8th, 2010

Sometimes we do stupid things. Or things that seem stupid in the beginning or that we are unsure of and turn out to be something really good. So good that we start thinking ‘Allaħares m’għamiltx hekk’ or ‘Allaħares ma mortx’. (So that doesn’t have a proper translation but it’s something around ‘I don’t want to imagine how things would be hadn’t I gone there/done that.’ The literal translation from Maltese would be ‘God forbid I didn’t do that/go there’ but it doesn’t make sense. So you understand.). Anyway, before I start badly lecturing about things you should do without thinking, I’ll stay on the original topic (ie. Art. I mean to get to talking about art somewhere.) Additional warning, this post might be accidentally a bit long.

There are a few things I cannot imagine how my life would have turned out had I not done them in the way I did. I’m exaggerating, of course. My life would probably still be the same. But let’s say that there would be a tiny list of mainly;

So, the last one is the most recent. I’d seen a billboard ad of this art fair at the Freiburg train station and it did interest me but it was more like something around the ‘as ifs’ and ‘I wish’. Then I got my Saturday off and made plans to go to Basel with a friend, but she decided that she wanted to meet another friend so I was left with no plans for my Saturday. I have other friends but since one went back home to Hungary (Pity, Freiburg will be so nice in Spring!), another was away and the rest are pretty much none existent I was left with a blank day. I don’t know how I remembered the art fair and decided to go (Luke pushed me a bit, but yeah, it’s art and Luke, what do you expect). So I made plans at 10pm to go to the art fair the next day.

I had a good start of the day, it started snowing before I left home (I was seriously wondering why does it always have to snow when I plan long train trips) although my train was just one hour I was still thinking SNOW! AND TODAY AGAIN? But I don’t do last minute change in plans (I actually do, a lot, but I couldn’t then. You cannot mess with yummy plans like that). So I went anyway up to Karlsruhe on my own, and to the fair. And then it gets dreamy and I cannot explain why. You have to be there to feel it. Because I’m starting to really believe that you cannot only see art. It’s surrounded with another thousand things which can range from happy feelings to hyperactiveness – it’s strange really. I guess this blog post will make me sound very… art-sy (wrong word, but you get it). But sometimes I just don’t understand how people can go about without appreciating art, or literature, or music, or everything.

No photos were allowed (which wasn’t a problem really, you have to be there to see the thing, not see the photos to see how great it is.) But I found a few on their website (copyright to all respective owners, of course-y and click to enlarge):

Yes, pretty sights. So it was a great solitary day out, something we should all try someday; go out and appreciate without anyone messing with our opinions and thoughts. I mean, I do it quite often but then again I need a life.

Number 5!

Hallow, thanks to all those who participated in the pencil contest. Random.org picked a winner for me:

So, congrats Debs :D I’ll make the contest easier next time, although picking a German city was pretty easy! Have a nice weekend! I’m quite happy because I went out and bought an A3 block of drawing paper today. Yummy. xo

Frog!

March 1st, 2010

Hallow! It’s a sunny day and I’m doing a small give-away contest!

I have 2 very sweet pencils to give-away to one lucky person. All you have to do to participate is comment on this post and give me the name of a city or village in Germany. You cannot pick a place that has already been picked (we won’t run out of places…). I will then edit your comment and give you a number, in the order of your comment (ie. first comment is 1, second is 2 and so on). You can comment on this post until the 4th of March till midnight. I will then pick a number at random from random.org and find a winner.

You can comment without a place if you do not want to participate. Everything’s easy. Check back soon and subscribe to my blog for other give-aways, I have more in mind! Have a nice week! xo

EDIT: I am seriously curious about the reasons why guys are interested in winning two pink frog pencils that say kiss me? And I’ve had a majority of guys commenting so far? :p
